European Style Betting Agencies Don't Fit the American Model

Anyone who is a fan of worldwide soccer, or who has roamed the streets of London or Prague would be familiar with companies such as Bwin, Ladbrokes, Bet365, and Fortuna and so on. These are the large betting agencies that in some places seem to have a betting store or bookmakers on every block. Their names sponsor soccer teams, and their websites are some of the most-visited in the world.

However, for Americans that don’t follow soccer and have never been to Europe, these companies are basically unknown. With betting shops being illegal in nearly every state, and online sports betting and online casino gambling both (technically) illegal, there is little chance for betting agencies to make their mark in the United States.

That doesn’t mean that there are not any well-known gambling brands; these famous names tend to come more from the ranks of brick and mortar casinos, and not from betting agencies common to Europe.

Companies such as Bally’s, Caesar’s Palace, MGM, and Harrah’s are known for their strings of casino resorts around the country. For instance, Harrah’s locations can be found in Lake Tahoe, Las Vegas, Atlantic City, New Orleans, Illinois, and elsewhere. While not a betting agency in the European sense of the term, they are a recognized name in casino gambling.

A few online bookmakers and poker sites are also well-known in the United States. Many gamblers know the name PokerStars or Bet365, even though they might not have access to those sites from the United States. However, it appears that it will be a long time before a company such as Bwin becomes a household name for Americans, as the concept of the large betting agency simply has not been invented yet.
